Tonight was the latest episode of the ABC show, Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition. Tonight we meet Nyla, a 27-year old woman who weighs 435 pounds at the beginning of the episode.

Nyla started by explaining that her persona on the outside isn’t how she feels on the inside. I’d bet that 99% of fat people feel this way. Put on a show and a smile but inside you hurt like hell.
The ABC nutritionist explained that Nyla’s main issue with food is portion control. In the opening clip, Nyla ate 10 pounds of crawfish and a bunch of side dishes.
It seems like in every episode, Chris gets the person to share why they are so heavy – for Nyla it sounds like not having a father in her life was a big contributor. I know all about this first hand – I wish I had a father in my life especially when I was a kid.
Chris said “you are going to have to learn how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.” To me this is so true – when we want to change – anything – we have to learn how to be uncomfortable at first. Look at me – I drink my first green juice and it was horrible – completely uncomfortable. Now I totally love the green lemonade and other green juices that I’ve been drinking everyday for over a week now.
Nyla’s phase 1 goal was to lose 100 pounds in 3 months. Chris took away her A/C unit and forced her to walk up a mall escalator on the wrong side.
There seemed to be a bigger focus on food with Nyla than other episodes – was pretty refreshing for a change.
Nyla lost 74 pounds in the first phase – 26 below the 100 pound goal. Chris had Nyla set her own phase 2 goal – something I’ve never seen before and she set the goal at 70 pounds.
Nyla ended phase 2 at 341 pounds. Chris said this was the first time he’s worked with someone who didn’t lose at least 100 pounds in the first 6 months. The first hour of the show ended with Nyla walking away from Chris.
The doctor talked about the ability to handle the stress of everyday life becomes easier as you lose weight. I thought this was very interesting!
Chris and his team found Nyla’s father – Chris wanted to give her the opportunity to find closure after 27 yrs. Nyla learned that her father committed suicide in his 50s.
Nyla ended phase 3 at 303 pounds. She lost over 30% of her body weight in 9 months.
At the final 1-year weigh-in, Nyla ended at 278lb wit 157 pounds lost – SO AMAZING!
