I had lunch with a friend this week and she asked me all about my new healthy fit lifestyle journey. During the conversation, she asked me if I am counting calories and what my daily caloric intake is.
I told her that I have never counted calories and I still don’t today. I haven’t discussed the idea of calorie counting with Linda (I will bring it up in our next nutrition session) but I am nearly sure she will agree with what I note below.
Now if we go back, I never counted calories because most likely I was over the recommended daily allowance of calories before noon. I am guessing that if you eat a meal at McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, etc., that you will be nearly at the daily recommendation in just that one meal (if not over the recommended calories per day).
Today I don’t count calories because I am eating 100% healthy – just fruits, vegetables and chicken about 5x a week. If you eat all fruits and vegetables, I bet that calories don’t even matter. Put good in and forget about all that counting crap. Something tells me that we only need to count when we want to go beyond what we know we should be eating.
Here are a few examples of why I don’t count calories today…
- a medium sweet potato has 100 calories
- a cup of peas and carrots has 100 calories
- half a pound of spinach like what i use in my smoothies every day – 40 calories
- a pound of watermelon has 100 calories
- 100 grams of grilled chicken breast has 263 calories
- a mcdonalds double quarter pounder with cheese has 750 calories
I wonder if I am even eating 1,000 calories a day with my morning smoothie, salad for lunch and a grilled chicken with veggies dinner.
Frankly I don’t care – I am losing weight, I feel better than ever, I think I am looking better and better every day and I am loving life more than ever. If that’s 500 calories or 5,000 fine — I just want to continue to feel better and better every day for the rest of my life.
